Health booth volunteer working with children at the stock show

DENVER – Once again our Colorado Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program is partnering with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus to sponsor six health booths at the National Western Stock Show. The booths will offer free adult and child health screenings and oral health screenings.

This interdisciplinary effort brings together students, deans, faculty and staff from a variety of schools, programs and organizations including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dental medicine, physician assistant, physical therapy, public health and the CU Denver Aurora LIGHTS Pre-Health Profession students. In 2011, volunteers provided an impressive 2,884 hours of their time to screen 1,916 adults and 934 children.

The target populations are farmers, ranchers and uninsured adults who are
offered free onsite screening for blood pressure, blood sugar (glucose), blood cholesterol and body mass index assessment. All other adults are offered free onsite screening for blood pressure, blood sugar, oral health and body mass index. Youth ages 2-18 participated in the interactive Heart Smart Kids cardiovascular risk assessment and parents were given a handout with a few goals for improvement.

The stock show opens on January 7 and runs through January 22. Entrance pass is provided. For more information call 303-724-4748 or go to www.ucdenver.edu/coahec
